How to add and insert a document title in Word

Microsoft Word maintains information about a Word document, such as author, tags, or title. This article shows you how to access and modify these document properties in Word. Then you will learn to add a document title in Word, which you can insert in your header, footer, or heading and update fields regularly. Lastly, we want to show you how to update the title page in Word.

How to add a document title in Word properties

Microsoft Word has information stored in document properties. Read about how you can access and change custom document properties in Word. But if you only need to add a title, you can do it in a few steps.

Steps to add a document title in Word:

  • Open your Word document and go to the File tab in the ribbon
  • Click on Info on the left pane
  • Go to Properties on the right > Title
  • Add a title

As you can see in the picture below, it is effortless. But if you need to add other information to the document, you should open the advanced properties.

Follow the steps below to open advanced document properties:

  • Go to the File tab in the ribbon
  • Click on Info on the left pane
  • Click on Properties
  • Select Advanced Properties

The Properties dialog box opens, where you can add a title, subject, company, or change the author.

  • Go to the Summary tab, as shown in the below picture.
  • After you have made your changes, remember to click OK.

Once you set the title in document properties, you can return by clicking on the arrow in the upper-left corner.

How to insert a title in word and return to document

Insert a document property title in Word

The first step was to add the title to the document properties in Word. Now you can insert a document title as your heading and even in your header and footer. There are a few ways to add a title to your Word document. The fastest way to insert a document property title is by opening Quick Parts or Document Info in the ribbon. You can also open the Field dialog box and select the document title.

First, we want to insert a document title in your Word document as a heading. We will do this by using Quick Parts in the ribbon.

  1. Place the cursor where you want to see the title
  2. Click on the Insert tab of the ribbon
  3. Go to the Text group > Click on Quick Parts
  4. Click on Document Property
  5. From that selection > Select Title

The steps are almost identical if you are in the header or footer. It only looks different as you are in another tab (Header & Footer Tools).

Follow the steps below to insert a document property in a header or footer.

  1. Double-click in the header or footer
  2. A new tab appears > Click on Header & Footer Tools > or Design
  3. Click on the icon Quick Parts
  4. Select Document Property
  5. Then select Title

It will automatically put a title in your header or footer in Word.

You can also do it differently by using the icon Document Info instead of Quick Parts. The results will be the same.

How to insert a document property title in a header or footer:

  1. Double-click in the header or footer
  2. A new tab appears > Click on Header & Footer Tools > or Design
  3. Click on the icon Document Info
  4. Select Document Title

  • If you want to change other than Document Title in your Word document
  • Then go to Document Property > Then select e.g., Title (or whatever you want to modify)

Open the Field dialog box to insert a document title

For this option, you first need to open the Field dialog box. Then we need to make a few changes to insert a document title page in Word.

Steps to open the Field dialog box:

  1. Place the cursor where you want the title to appear
  2. Click on the Insert tab in the ribbon
  3. Go to the Text group > Click on the icon Quick Parts
  4. Select Field

It will open the Field dialog box in your Word document.

There are a few options to open the Field dialog box in the header or footer. We will first show you the fastest way to open the Field dialog box in a header or footer.

  1. Double-click in the header or footer
  2. A new tab appears > Click on Header & Footer Tools > or Design
  3. Click on the icon Quick Parts
  4. Select Field

It will automatically open the Field dialog box.

You can also open the Field dialog box another way by following these steps:

  • Double-click in the header or footer
  • A new tab appears > Click on Header & Footer Tools > or Design
  • Click on the icon Document Info
  • Select Field

How to insert a title field from the Field dialog box

Once you have opened the Field dialog box in your Word document. Then you need to follow the steps below in the Field dialog box:

  1. In Categories > Select Document Information
  2. Under Field names > Click on Title, so it changes to blue color
  3. Click OK

The field will automatically be inserted into your Word document.

You can also do the steps slightly differently in the Field dialog box.

  1. In Categories > (All)
  2. Under Field names > Select DocProperty, so it turns blue
  3. On the right under Property > Select Title, so it turns blue
  4. Click OK

It will also insert a title field in your Word document.

Update document title

You can insert the title multiple times in your Word document. The only thing you should not forget is to update it regularly. Once you update one field, it will automatically update the other fields in the same Word document.

Steps to update a title field manually in a Word document:

  • Right-click on the field > it turns grey
  • Click Update Field

Some fields must be updated separately, like in the header or footer. Please go into the header or footer, select the text, and update it manually. If you want to update all the fields in Word, follow the steps below.

  • Press Ctrl + A to select all text
  • Press F9
