When you insert an image in your Word document, you can lock its position. Word has a tool you can use to fix images in the same place, even when you edit text around it. Fix position on page greyed out
If you can’t select fix position on page or it is greyed out, then the image is in line with the text. You can’t lock an image in Word if the wrapping style is In Line with Text.
In our examples below, we have a picture In Line with Text. As you can see, the tool fix position on page is greyed out.
Therefore, you need to choose a text wrapping style for your picture. You can only fix position on page if you wrap text around an image. You can read this article about how to wrap text around an image.
The easiest way is to right-click on an image to change its wrapping style. Follow these steps to change the wrapping style of your image:
- Right-click on the image
- Select > Wrap Text
- Choose one of these six different wrapping styles
We have chosen the text wrapping style Square in the picture below. Then we selected fix position on page, and now it has a checkmark before it. But remember that you can either choose the image to move with text or fix position on page.
Fix position on page using Format in the ribbon
If you are satisfied with the placement of your image, then you can fix the position on page in Word. This will stop images from moving around in Word.
Follow these steps below to fix the position of an image using the ribbon:
- Click on the image
- In the ribbon > Go to Picture Tools > Format
- Click on Wrap Text
- Select > Fix position on page
There should be a checkmark in front of fix position on page. It means that the picture will not move to another place. So, if you are adding or deleting other images or text to the Word document, the picture will stay in place. However, you can still move the picture to another place by clicking on it with your mouse cursor.
Use Layout Options icon to fix position on page
You can easily keep an image in position in Word by using the blue Layout Options icon:
- Click on the image to view an icon
- On the right of the image > Click on the blue Layout Options icon
- From this selection > Choose fix position on page
After selecting it, you will see a black dot in front of it. Now, the image will stop moving around when editing text. However, you can still move the picture to another place by clicking on it with your mouse cursor.
Right-click on image to lock an image
You could use another method to fix the position on the image’s page.
- Right-click on an image
- Select > Wrap Text
- Choose > Fix Position on Page
This method will also lock the image in a Word document, preventing from moving with text.
There are many ways to find the fix position on page in Word. Fix positions on page is greyed out in Word. It could be because your image uses the wrapping style In Line with Text. Change it into another text wrapping style and lock the image. It will stop images from moving around in Word.
