Spelling and grammar check not working in Word

Everybody can check spelling and grammar in Microsoft Word. Spelling and grammar checking is necessary, as it helps you write correctly. What should you do if spell check is not working in Word, or you can’t turn it on? There are several solutions if the spelling and grammar check is not working in your Word document. This article will also show you how to check spelling and grammar in another language.

Enable spell check in Word

Usually, you can see the spelling errors in your document by the red wavy underline. A blue wavy underline means that you have a grammar error or misunderstanding. Therefore you should rewrite the sentence as it is not understandable or confusing. It is also a way to find out that spell check in Word is working.

If you want to check your spelling in Word, you have to open your document and select the text you want to check for spelling. So check spelling and grammar for the entire document by press Ctrl + Alt on your keyboard to select the whole text.

Click on Review > Then click on Spelling & Grammar on the left.

Now you know how to enable spell check in Word as you write, but you can also permanently pin it in your status bar.

  • First, right-click anywhere on your status bar.
  • Customize Status Bar opens > Then click on Spelling and Grammar Check, so it has a tick in front of it.

Now you can find the Spelling and Grammar Check icon in your status bar, as shown in the below picture. You can check your spelling every time by clicking on the icon. If the icon shows a cross on it, it means that there are spelling mistakes that should be corrected. If the spelling icon has a check on it, then the spelling in your Word document is correct.

If your spelling and grammar check is still not working, you can have to change the settings in Word Options. There are several ways to access the box Word Options.

1 – Easy way to access Word Options box

Open your Word document and click on File.

Now you have to click on More in the lower-left corner > Then click on Options.

A new box opens up in your document called Word Options.

2 – Access Word Options box

Another way to access Word Options is to click on Review > Then click on Language > Choose Language Preferences. Now, the Word Options box will open automatically.

3 – Fast way to access Word Options box

This option is a fast way to access the Word Options box. First, you have to right-click somewhere in your ribbon or tabs > Then select Customize the Ribbon. The Word Options box opens immediately.

Right-click in your ribbon and click on customize the ribbon. This will open your Word Options box.

Turn on spelling and grammar check

When you access the box Word Options, follow the steps below:

  • Click on Proofing, which is on the left of this box.
  • Then tick on Check spelling as you type and Mark grammar errors as you type.
  • Click on OK.

Sometimes the spelling and grammar checks still don’t seem to work. This could be because you have selected the wrong options.

If you open the Word Options box > Proofing > Scroll down and go to Exceptions. You will see two options that should not be selected.

  • Hide spelling errors in this document only
  • Hide grammar errors in this document only

Remember to turn these two options off in your Word Options settings.

Change spelling to another language

If your spell check in your Word document is still not working it could be because of the language settings. When you are writing a document in another language, you should change the spelling and grammar check to this language.

First, you have to access the Language dialogue box. You can find the Language icon in your status bar. If not > Right-click anywhere on your status bar > choose Language. In our case, you will find it under English (United Stated) at the bottom of the document. Whenever you want to use it, click on it once, and the Language box will open automatically.

You can also access the Language dialogue box another way. Click on the Review tab > Then click on Language > Choose Set Proofing Language.

In the Language box, please select the language you want to change it to so it becomes blue > Then click on Set As Default > Lastly, click OK.

Remember to tick off Do not check spelling or grammar in the Language box. If this option is selected, Word will not check the spelling or grammar for this particular document.
